Some women love to knit and when someone says “knitting” what do you usually think of? The first thing that used to come to my mind was my grandmother, who watches Jeopardy every night and knits yards and yards. She scarved for her grandkids like baby hats for their kids, and all kinds of little gifts for the hospital patients she looks after.

This is what used to come to mind. Until I went out on a date in college, and my date gave me a gift at the beginning of the night. It was a scarf that he had knitted for me himself. It was at that point that I started to question all my preconceptions. Knitting is not just for grandmas. And it is not just for women. It is time to reclaim knitting for all genders!

This campaign hardly originated with me and my first date experience. There are many males who love to knit, including celebrities, and are not ashamed to admit it. David Arquette is an avid knitter. He may have learned the skill from his grandmother. However, he does not think it is a skill that should be relegated to women only. He is so avid with the needles that he made the cover ofCelebrity Scarves 2: Hollywood Knits for Breast Cancer Research. As Ryan Gosling, everyone’s favorite meme celebrity, might say, “Hey Girl – can I knit you a sweater? Because you’re giving me chills!” He learned to knit on the set of Lars and the Real Girl, another example of knitting it making headway on the big stage. Russell Crowe has been known to pose with his favorite hobby as well.

And why should men be ashamed of enjoying knitting?  Knitting has so many beneficial properties, even if you never produce anything worth wearing! Knitting has been hailed as the “new yoga,” and snaps of men knitting and conversations were they talk about its meditative properties are blowing up social media.

Don’t forget to finish off your project with a custom label to commemorate the time, place, and loving hands that made it.
