Sewing Projects For Around The Home

Get crafty around the home with some advanced sewing projects to brighten up your living space.

Piped Pillow Case - A pillowcase might not be everyone's idea of an advanced sewing project, but take yours to the next level with piped edges. Piping can be made in a range of thicknesses using a soft cord and covered with a matching or contrasting fabric to the rest of your project. Although time-consuming, when done right, handmade piping is a highly polished and professional finish to many projects.

Box cushion covers - For a soft-furnishing project where fit is of utmost importance, box cushion covers take the cake. Recovering box cushions might feel overwhelming, but like anything, they can be broken down into bite-size pieces, with plenty of tutorials available online.

Pleated Curtains - A set of pleated curtains is a very achievable project for anyone with previous sewing experience under their belt. Sewing great lengths of fabric can be complicated, even if it is just straight stitches, so you will need to pay attention when making your curtains.

Fitted Sheets - Making your own set of bed linen is a satisfying project, particularly when you get to be the one to curl up in it afterward. A fitted sheet is a perfect accompaniment to a homemade duvet cover, whether you choose one in a matching colorway, or better yet, a contrasting pop.

Fabric Pouf - A homemade fabric pouf is a welcome addition to any space. A pouf makes a great extra seat or table and is ideal for the kids room too. They are lightweight and with a soft surface, so can be dragged about by little hands as needed. Bonus points for making yours with a removable cover so any potential accidents can be cleaned up easily.

Advanced Sewing Projects For You To Wear

Whether you are sewing something for yourself or a loved one, these project ideas are sure to inspire.

Wool Coat - If you are looking for a project to keep you warm, a wool coat is a fun challenge for any sewist. If you are unsure about a pattern, look for one that has a lot of positive reviews and photos submitted by other makers. It will give you a good idea of what the finished coat will actually look like and will save you from making too many adjustments on the fly.

A Silk Organza Over-Dress - Sewing with organza or another sheer silk is not for the faint of heart. It can be slippery and difficult, and you will likely need to use french seams where possible as the inside will be visible. But the results are well worth it. Organza will hold beautiful, sculptural shapes while remaining delicate and feminine.

Jeans - Sewing up a pair of jeans is not a project for a beginner sewist. With unique features like bar tacks, heavy topstitching, and rivets, you will be sure to come across something you haven't had experience with before. And if you want to know more about the clothing labels used on denim, check out our blog post Best Of Labels: Levi Strauss & Co.

Tailoring - A nicely tailored jacket or pair of pants will last a lifetime. To be successful at tailoring, you need a sharp eye and a lot of patience. The extra attention to detail will all be worth it when your handmade items look like you have come straight from Savile Row.

Pattern Magic Pattern Book - A cult favorite! This book uses unique pattern cutting techniques to create beautiful geometric shapes and will be sure to inspire even the most seasoned sewist. Having a good understanding of pattern making is important for being able to recreate the patterns in this book, and even if you don't feel ready, it is a beautiful book to own and admire.

Sewing Projects For You To Put Things In

We humans can never have enough bags! Whether it is one to keep your drinks cool or one to hold your child with...

Meh Dai Baby Carrier - The Meh Dai cloth carrier originates from China. It is a perfect style for sewing yourself as it uses ties for adjusting and doesn't need any buckles and clips. Before embarking on this (or any homemade cloth carrier) make sure you have read the safety precautions for baby wearing so you can adjust the carrier to suit your little one.

Insulated Carrier Bag - An insulated carry bag is a great sewing project for anyone who enjoys spending time outside and meeting with friends. It is a bit more complicated than a regular carry bag as you will need to use some insulated padding as a filler and a waterproof lining to protect the bag from spills. To make it even more secure, you can use seam sealing tape to prevent liquids from soaking through the weak spots.

Leather Tote - An elegant leather tote bag never goes out of style. Year-after-year luxury designers such as Celine, Saint Laurent, & Acne all have some version of this, so why not make your own at home. Many thinner types of leather can be sewn up on sturdy domestic machines using just a leather needle and a strong thread. And if the straps seem overly complicated, you can often buy pre-made straps that are ready to be sewn on.
