Whether creating something soft and gentle for a baby gift, or taking care of your favorite fleece throw for watching Netflix, keeping plush fabrics super soft can be a simple matter. We all know the disappointment of losing that softness after a couple washings. But with some of these simple tips can help you extend that period as long as possible and enjoy the softest of soft fabrics!

The plush effect comes from the weaving process. Two layers of fabric are woven together with an extra layer of threads. This extra layer is then slices through to create a “pile.” Depending on your fiber and the tightness of the weave, this pile can be thick and luxurious (like fleece or microfleece), or thinner and denser (like velvet). When a plush fabric “pills,” it is the pile that is being affected.

  • Wash the fabric or item by itself or with other similar fabrics: Pilling occurs when the fabric rubs against other fabrics (with more abrasive fibers). Wash on a gentle cycle or, even better, hand wash.
  • Use a gentle detergent and fabric softener when washing: Abrasive chemicals also break down the fiber (usually a synthetic blend). Use something gentle and pre-dissolve it in the water so the plush fabric doesn’t come into direct contact with the undiluted product.
  • Double rinse in cool water: If a thin layer of detergent remains on the fabric, it will feel less soft. A double rinse cycle will take care of this. Some people recommend mixing ½ cup white vinegar (in rinse cycle) or ½ cup baking soda (while machine is filling) to remove residue and soften the fabric.
  • The higher the thread count, the softer: A good rule of thumb when selecting the fabric.
  • Line dry, if possible: This is the best way to retain softness. If you use a machine, tumble dry on a low temperature, and remove it as SOON as it is dry. And use a dryer sheet. Some people recommend putting a tennis ball in the dryer with the item to help keep it soft!
  • Softening cotton: Some people recommend soaking a soft cotton or cotton blend in salt water for 2-3 days before laundering as normal. While I admittedly haven’t tried it yet, many people swear by it for softening fabric. ½ cup of salt per quart of lukewarm water.
  • Check your care label! All of these tips can be trumped by the specific laundering instructions on the care label. Don’t ever forget it! And don’t forget to include a care label of your own on everything you make!
