Design Tips For Hang Tags
We have included a few helpful design tips to get you started on making your dream hang tags. If you choose a double-sided hang tag you will need to provide designs for both sizes, so keep this in mind when doing your layout.
Shape & Size
At Dutch Label Shop our hang tags are approximately 3.5inch x 1.5inch / 9cm x 4cm, with a hole positioned at the top if held in portrait orientation. It has been an ideal size for our customers as it is large enough to hold plenty of information but will not be overly bothersome for customers when they are trying items.
If you are after unique custom shapes and sizes, local printers may be able to provide you with this service. This will give you complete control over the size and shape of your hang tags. If you go down this route, make sure to include a small hole for attaching a string to your hang tag, and enough space to fit a sticker or handwritten product information.
Font & Text
Hang tags are usually printed, and most fonts will work perfectly well on them. For any important information you want to include (like product details), we usually advise using a standard sans-serif font so customers won't have trouble reading it.
For your brand name, you may prefer to choose a font that reflects your brand's personality. A script font that looks like cursive writing gives the impression of elegance, while a handwritten font can portray a more informal, quirky, or childlike message. By choosing a font that reflects your personality, you will best attract the right customers to your business.
Colors
Try to choose colors that compliment your products. You could go with a patterned background to match a heritage fabric that you've used, or a solid color that compliments a specific trim you like. Just be sure to pick a contrasting color for your text and logo to ensure customers can easily read it.

Designing Your Hang Tags with the DLS Online Tools
Dutch Label Shop offers two kinds of hang tags: The Basic Hang Tag and The Logo Hang Tag.
Using the Online Design Tool
You can choose a font, insert your own text, use symbols, and pick specific tag or text colors. The size of the tag is 9 cm x 4 cm.
The Label Design Tool is set up in the following way:
- Write the text that you want to put on your custom label:
The hang tag has room for up to three lines of text to state the brand name, collection title, an inspirational quote, or another piece of information about your brand. You can center the text, or align it left or right.
- Select a background color:
Choose among 19 different colors.
- Select a font color:
Choose among 19 different colors.
- Choose a font:
Choose among 50 different fonts. You can go for a font that is identical or similar to the one you used for your logo label, but you can also opt for something different to create a nice contrast between the hang tag and the logo label.
- Choose a symbol:
Do you want to communicate a message about your brand using a specific symbol? We offer symbols in various categories: sewing, fashion, nature, love, animals, beach, birds, food, sports, etc.
- Decide whether to use a label cord:
It is possible to order your custom label with a cord, which makes it easy to attach the label to the clothing item. Cords come in white and black.
- Put a frame around your text:
Choose a frame to put around your text. For example, this could be a clean white line creating a professional look.
- Enter the order amount
This is the final step before you complete your order! Determine how many labels you need. The Label Design Tool displays an overview of your order, which contains the order amount and the corresponding price.
On the right side of the page, you can see a table with an overview of your order: it contains features such as the selected size, tag color, font color, frame, symbols, etc. It also displays a preview image of your custom label.
The Logo Hang Tag
If you have already designed your own logo, you can opt for the Logo Hang Tag. In order to design the label to your liking, you can again use the Label Design Tool by Dutch Label Shop. The size of the hang tag is 9.0 cm x 4.0 cm.
The design tool contains the following steps:
- Front side:
In this section, you can upload or e-mail the image you have designed. When you upload the image, you can see a preview of the design. Accepted image formats are JPG, JPEG, PNG and GIF.
- Backside:
Regarding the backside of your custom label, you have four different options. Determine which option fits your brand and collection best to make the label look as professional as possible. You can give the backside of your custom label the same color as the front side, you pick a white backside, or you can opt for a picture.
- Cord:
It is possible to order your custom label with a cord, which makes it easy to attach the label to the clothing item. Cords come in white and black.
- Special requests:
If you have any special requests regarding the color, or if we need to take something into account, please let us know!
- Choose how many hang tags to order:
The last step of your order! Determine how many labels you need. The tool displays an overview of the number and corresponding price.
